Many of the calibration tasks and information you want to obtain can be completed and displayed using PrintRun (refered to after this as Pronterface). There are versions for different OSs. I have found it is a great troubleshooting tool and I reference it when I discuss using a terminal interface.

First you need to connect your printer to your computer using the CH340 driver as discussed in a previous post. The com port that is created by the driver has to match the com port in pronterface before you click connect. (The connect button will say disconnect once it is connected)

The terminal interface is on the right hand side. There is the display window, and the send button/gcode entry window below it. On the left hand side of the interface, you will see common controls used by 3D printers, and the current temperatures of the system.
